Ten and Under Tennis

“When is My Kid Going to Play REAL Tennis?”

The Ten & Under tennis format was introduced by the USTA in 2007 for kids ages 5 thru 10. It was designed to prepare your child to play REAL tennis by–

  • Exposing kids to the FUN in tennis,
  • Establishing proper hand/eye coordination,
  • Applying drills and games that require footwork coordination,
  • Helping with judging the bounce of the ball,
  • Demonstrating proper swing motion of the tennis racket,
  • Using simpler game scoring for matches,
  • Exposing kids to group activities and new friends, and
  • Using easier-to-handle equipment: Smaller courts (36 ft. & 60 ft. vs. adult 78 ft.), lower nets, smaller rackets (19 to 25 inches vs. adult 27 inches), larger & softer balls ( foam, red & orange).

Suggestions:
·        Do NOT make your kids use your adult racket with yellow balls until they reach at least 11 years old,
·        Encourage kids to play and have FUN, but do NOT pressure them to win,
·        Let kids choose to play and quit if desired, and
·        Discipline kids when necessary.

Please DONATE to the HCTA that small (19 to 25-inch) racket that your teenage child has outgrown - many other kids will benefit.
